Profiles:

Cary, Gwen Louise

|I am a Central NY native living in Jundiaí, SP, Brazil for the last… very long time.

In these last almost twenty years, I’ve taught EFL in language schools, a university summer intensive language institute back in NY State, and privately to all age groups but mainly adult professionals. In 2001, I earned a four year degree and teaching license in Portuguese and English (EFL) literatures and languages.

Over the last couple of years, I have included online activities increasingly to the resources of my students. From this course, besides the opportunity for professional development and exchanging ideas with other colleagues, I hope to get a better understanding of what can be done productively with grammar and vocabulary online learning better ways to include practice in my online learning content.|

Cornwell, Steve

|Hello from Japan where I have lived for 14 years (2 near Tokyo, 12 in Osaka). In our spare time, my wife, Yoshiko, and I like to go to movies, eat out, and when we have time, travel (our most recent trip was to Dubai).

I teach at a women's college in Osaka where all the students are majoring in English but are able to concentrate in Business, NGO management, or communication (teaching or translation). I have taught children, young people, and adults in community, business, and higher education settings (beginner through advanced) in the U.S., Japan, Ecuador (2 months), and China (7 weeks).

Not sure what ICT refers to but computers must be in there somewhere. I have taught online for several years and have taken several online courses. I have had a long interest in vocabulary and have taught teachers how to teach grammar so think I will learn a lot from this course.|

Fawzi, Hala

| I am Hala from Khartoum, as it says, so "great" to be here! It feels much cozy to "see" old faces and friends from past TESOL courses here ! Welcome all old TESOL pals! It is an exciting experience to be with Tere and Daf as tutors who are accustomed to making rough seas turn into smooth ones!

I am an EFL instructor who teaches at the tertiary level, a tutor at the Open University of Sudan, an interested teacher in integrating technology into classroom, a webhead,a mother for three lovely kids, a wife to a jealous-of-PC husband, as I always write in my course introduction for giving an excuse to my instructor whenever being late in submitting tasks and assignments!!!

I am much interested in online learning, blended learning, and teacher professional development especially when beating the challenges of any of these fields in difficult circumstances encountered in a poor infrastructure country like Sudan.

I had a major PC crash lately in which I lost "everything" stored from 2002!I went through a nearly mental breakdown and at the end ,as it was my fault not to have a back up, here I am, starting from scratch !!

I can't wait to interact with you.

"See "all online soon. Hala

Fernandez, Gail

|Hi everyone! This is my third on-line course. I'm getting more computer literate, but I have quite aways to go!! Anyway, I'd like to tell you about myself.

I have a masters in TESOL from U of Pennsylvania (received in the early 1990's). I have taught in a number of Intensive English Programs -- the American Language Program at NYU and at Boston University. I've also taught in developmental English programs including at Hunter College. In addition, I've created programs for a number of corporations and hotels. Currently, I'm an Assistant Professor at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ. Hopefully, I will be tenured in 2 more years!

Our program at Bergen is a bit out-of-date. All our skills are taught separately -- 3 hours reading, 3 hours writing, 3 hours speech(not in our dept.) and 6 hours of grammar. Last year, a group of us received a grant to link reading and writing along with content and technology. My course has a business English focus. We have been using Webct for our courses. This semester I will try having students keep journals on-line and will have them respond to one another. Our program feels that students lack vocabulary and I'm very interested in learning how I can add on-line activities (that are relevant to my students) to my class. I also teach a low-level grammar course using the book Grammar in Context. I enjoy the book and I add many fun activities for student practice. I would like to learn more about teaching grammar on-line for lower level students.

I'm sorry for rambling on ... also, I will try to upload a picture of myself.

Hunter, Moira

My name is Moira, and I live in France. Born and educated in the UK, after graduating in International Business, I pursued my first career working with corporations in the USA, Africa and Europe before entering the field of education and obtaining an M.Ed in ELT. I teach undergraduate and graduate students of engineering, architecture and business in three Grandes Ecoles (specialised universities) in Paris and coach in-company executives, both f2f and online. I really started getting interested in online teaching some four years ago. I took my first real online course LeTTOL (Learning to Teach Online) and have never looked back since :-)

Lawrence, Geoffrey

|I'm Geoff from Toronto and am happy to meet all of you - and very excited about using a wiki! I have about 12 years experience teaching ESL to adults and TESL in Toronto to very multicultural groups. I'm currently working on my doctorate in second language education and international development ed at the University of Toronto focusing on the impact of learning environments on teacher development and second language education. I'm particularly interested in integrating second language ed/teacher dvpmt and intercultural communication; how online and particularly blended learning (combining face-to-face and online learning) can enhance student/teacher voice and knowledge exchange in the classroom. I have been planning a research project with an EFL teaching colleague in Dubai to have our two ESL/EFL classes collaborate using a wiki to create an online newsletter - hence my excitement of using a wiki myself!!!

Looking forward to interacting with you all and exploring these online environments!

Cheers! Geoff.|

Lee, Chonglim

|Hello!

My name is Chonglim Lee from South Korea. I took several courses before but I couldn't participate it actively because of my busy schedule. I feel so terrible but I want to keep taking the course and do my best. Anyway I see some very familiar names on the class roster. Good to ‘see’ you all again.

I have been an EFL teacher for about one and half years. After that, I have worked for developing English textbooks for Korean children. I have a Med in biligual education and a Phd in curriculum and instruction,

My current interests are using technology and internet to teach English as a foreign language and also developing IBT (internet-based test) or CBT (computer-based test). If anyone has any ideas or information about these areas, please let me know. Any tips will be precious to me.

Malupa-Kim, Miralynn

Hello everyone!

My name is Miralynn Malupa-Kim. Please call me “Mira”. This is my fifth course, and I see some very familiar names on the class roster. Good to ‘see’ all of you again

I have been an EFL/ESL teacher for almost 11 years. I have taught in South Korea and the Philippines—and I would love to teach overseas again if I get the chance. I am currently teaching at the American Language Institute @San Diego State University in the EAP (English for Academic Purposes)program. I am also the TOEFLiBT Coordinator.

My current interests are academic study skills for international undergraduate and graduate students and studying the differences and similarities between male and female Teacher Talk (T.T).

I have been happily married for almost 6 years—no children, no pets.

Mamoun, Anita

Greetings from San Francisco (It's summer here...finally!),

How wonderful it is to see all these familiar names---all great contributors to previous courses! This is my third course, but I remember so well logging on to the Foundations course on the first day, knees trembling, beads of perspiration on my forehead, wondering why I was putting myself through this pain. Well, tomorrow is my first shift of my first day of my first part-time online job working in an online writing lab, called an OWL at a local university. It's exciting! Let me explain...

I was an ESL teacher for 25 years---all levels from beginner to very advanced (Academic Support) for students already enrolled in university classes. I taught in university programs and private IEP's. My last position was in the English for International Business Program at the University of California Berkeley Extension. In 2000, I left ESL to work as the personal assistant to my husband, a Realtor in San Francisco. I enjoy the real estate world, but I needed to get back to teaching, my passion, and believed that the TESOL Online Certificate Program would help me. It really has!

My husband and I enjoy the Bay Area, so rich in beautiful places, but a big part of my heart is really in Boston, where my family and "old" friends are. I love golf, art, and reading, but I don't do any of these enough!

Tere, Daf, and all my new online ESL buddies, very nice to meet you all! Anita

Newgarden, Kristi

|Hi Everyone. It's fall here in CT, so it feels right to be a student again.

This is my third course. I've been sharing my learning with teachers in my program here at the University of Connecticut, so we are all looking forward to some new ideas and techniques. Teachers are beginning to incorporate WebCT more widely, and vocabulary and grammar practice can be integrated into virtually any other skill or content course, online or f2f. I am looking forward to trying the exercise maker applications and passing on recommendations to others.

I am in my 7th year as director of the English Language Institute. I have been slowly working toward a PhD in Learning Technology. My main interests are materials development and teacher training.

I have taught in several countries in Asia, most recently Japan. I would love to teach overseas again someday, but for now, my husband and I are comfortably settled in rural Storrs. We have two daughters, ages 5 and 7. |

Peterson, Gordon

|Hi everyone! It is great to see so many familiar faces and names. As for me, I received my master's in adult education and distance learning in February of this year. Two weeks ago, I became Director of Adult Education at Howard College in San Angelo, Texas. While I was solely involved in ESL, now the GED is also part of the job description. I feel very strongly about the opportunities TESOL and adult education present.

I am married and have two children, aged 9 and 11. Let's enjoy what we learn in the next short four weeks!|

Proctor, Windy

Hi all, this is my third course and I see some familiar faces from PP108.

My name is Windy and I am an instructor at UAE University in Al Ain, UAE. I have been in the Middle East for 3 years and have finally adjusted to living in a region with only 2 seasons. I have traveled and taught in a number of places around the world with my husband.

This semester, I am in the ESP department at UAEU and teaching students in the Shari’ah/Law and Education Faculties. I have taught EFL/ESL courses, content-based classes on American Studies and cross-cultural communication, and Adult Basic Education.

I am interested in learning more about blended learning and it’s implications in the classroom. In the UAE, they are looking more and more toward e-learning.

Richards, Lori

Hi everyone! It's a pleasure to be here with all of you and I'm glad to see many of my cyber classmates from the other courses.

Me? I just started graduate school at New York University. I'm getting a master's in TESOL. I hope I'm not committing slow suicide by taking this course along with a full course load.

I studied business at Michigan State University. I worked in the hotel and retail business for many years until I got fed up. Then, I decided to become an English teacher! I lived and taught English in Veracruz, Mexico for two years. Then, I returned to New York City, applied to graduate school, and began working at Berlitz/Rockefeller Center.

I'm taking these online courses just for general knowledge. I really prefer face-to-face teaching, but I hope to use some of the information that I've been learning in these courses for future hybrid classes. Besides, I think it's important to be up-to-date and technologically savvy. It's all part of my professional development.

Dafne: I love Venezuela!! I've been there a million times. I used to be married to a Venezuelan and we used to visit his family in Valencia. I'm dying to go back for a visit. The beaches near Valencia are incredible.

Rink, Lori

Hello everyone! I'm Lori Rink, and I think it will be easier for me to use both names to avoid confusion with Lori Richards in the discussions. I have been teaching at a private women's college in Kobe, Japan for about four years now. My classes include reading, writing, public speech, and oral communication. I plan to return to the US with my husband and three-year-old daughter within the next two years. Currently, I am at the tail end of my summer vacation, so this class is helping me get back into the swing of things before my classes begin in October. I look forward to learning from each of you, and feel that I have already accomplished something by figuring out how to post to this wiki!

Rosa, Joseph

|Hi, I'm Joseph and I live in Calfornia about half-way between Sacramento and Berkeley. I've taught and trained teachers in Lesotho, Kenya, Thailand, Chile, Egypt, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. This is my fourth class for the year and will finish up in '07. I'm also taking these courses to do, hopefully, adjunct work for tertiary level teaching. I'm also thinking of tagging up on with a friend and write grants to delever online courses through public service agencies here in California. As some of you may remember I teach literacy and reading skills to inmates whose reading levels are below grade four. Since computer use is always an issue where I work I hope to eventually branch off into non-institution work but work with (possibly) work with parolees. Then again, I may just hang it all up and return back to Portugal. We'll see how it goes.

Skiniotou, Caterina

Dear All,

I am really happy to be meeting all of you once more. For those of you I have not shared a class with before:

My family and I live on Ios, a small island in the Cyclades, in Greece. I have taught ESL/EFL as well as GSL/GFL (G stands for Greek) in a large variety of teaching/studying environments for the last 24 years. I have been running my own language school on the island since 2003. This is my 5th course towards acquiring a TESOL certificate and I must say that what I have enjoyed most is sharing ideas with you all.

Spiri, John

Greetings cyber classmates. I'm a 44 year old American who has been living in Japan for nearly ten years. I'll be 5/6th of the way through the TESOL certificate program after I conclude this course (being optimistic about the results). I sort of dove into online material development a couple years ago, creating and maintaining a couple of webpages, which I'll share bits and pieces of, and hopefully improve. In addition to CALL, I'm also involved in Global Issues and teacher development. I feel I'm at a crossroads as I'm finishing the third year of my third three year contract of university teaching in Japan. Now that I I have a family, I'd very much like an employer that doesn't, as a matter of course, kick me out after three years. Nonetheless, I love teaching and am given wonderful opportunities to teach and research here in Japan, and look forward to sharing and learning from all of you.

Tyler, Jo

|Hi, everyone! It’s great to see so many familiar folks from previous online TESOL courses. I also love this idea of using a wiki to introduce everyone. And this seems like a great wiki.

I am in my 8th year as a professor of linguistics and education at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I run the graduate TESL program here. Most of my students are getting endorsements to teach K-12 ESL. I teach all the courses in the program and I am the only full time faculty member. There are over 50 students in the program, and I have two adjunct faculty that I supervise. I am also the coordinator of the research program for the MEd. Needless to say, I’m pretty busy.

One of the courses I teach is “Applied Linguistics: Grammar and Meaning”. I have taught it many times in a face-to-face environment, but I hope to develop some online lessons to make it a blended or hybrid course in the future.|
